Aproptiate response?

After our last discussion I keep thinking what is the burden between alarming and response to a threat. Of course Public health system does not want to create panic, but we want to give a prompt response. What would happened with SARS if we did not response in the way we did....now body knows, but experts said the action taken where appropriate. How we prepare for a pandemic? how sensitive should be the surveillance system? I assume we can use the popular fraze, It is better prevent than cure.

In the western world, we are very unique because we hold so much power over other nations, we have the resources to develop and sustain a large bank of storage treatment, and at the same time we try to keep a monopoly so that other less developed nations will need to come to us for help. It's sad that we strive for that control over other nations.

I think it is strange that so many political decisions regarding issues that have devastating impacts is always focused on not creating panic the in the general public, and yet those political decisions (like withholding information) actually create more problems. Someone really needs to get the balance of revealing information and creating panic down to an exact science so that political leaders can make better decisions next time.

One of the greatest challenges facing individual creating pandemic plans is public awareness. Crafting messages that are informative but not alarming are paramount to these efforts. Its a very difficult area to approach and at the moment the task is in the wrong hands.
